THIRST
INSTALLATION STATEMENT
THIRST depicts the Los Angeles drought and the scarcity of public water we are currently facing. One hundred and one plaster casts molded into masks represent the total population of 10,100,000 in the Los Angeles basin and their diverse reactions to the fresh water crisis.
The collection of masks with gaping mouths was initially staged and photographed on Zuma Beach in Malibu. It was mounted to replicate a scene from 'Mad Max: Fury Road' wherein corporate control over the water system leaves its villagers begging for a resource we view as a human right.
The project has evolved and the masks are now mounted on seven sheets of wood embedded in layers of sand to represent the population density of every continent. Drought, thirst and the unstable nature of our fresh water supply does not only pertain to California but to the world as a whole.
"Do not, my friends, become addicted to water. It will take hold of you and you will resent its absence." -Immortan Joe (Mad Max: Fury Road)
